A Christmas Carol is a remarkable novel of Charles Dickens. Again, though much smaller in volume, it conveys its message patently well, along with providing entertainment of high order, both for the young and the old. The protagonist is Mr Ebenezer Scrooge, the master of a counting-house. He is a model of a rich man being exorbitantly miserly, narrowminded and utterly devoid of the spirit of sprightliness even on the day of a merry Christmas. He has a clerk Bob Cratchit for whom he has no milk of human kindness and whom he compels to lead a sub-human life. Similarly, he is harsh on his own large-hearted nephew…

The book is a classic 1864 science fiction novel. The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. While looking through a book, Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a coded note written in runic script. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into an extinct Icelandic volcano, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. How they survive and come out of the pit after being ejected from Stromboli, a volcanic island in southern Italy, is an interesting story.

The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries towards the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events. The most notable are Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. Darnay is a French once-aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Carton is a dissipated British barrister who endeavours to redeem his ill-spent life out of his unrequited love for Darnay's wife.

The book tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. After falling down into the depths of the earth she finds herself in a corridor full of doors. At the end of the corridor there is a tiny door with a tiny key through which Alice can see a beautiful garden that she is desperate to enter. She then spots a bottle labeled “DRINK ME” (which she does), and begins to shrink until she is large enough to fit through the door. Unfortunately, she has left the key that fits the lock on a table, now well out of her reach. She then finds a cake labeled “EAT ME” (which, again, she does), and is restored to her normal size. Disconcerted by this frustrating series of events, Alice begins to cry, and caught unawares by a change in size not precipitated by food or drink, she shrinks and is washed away in her own tears.
