On Christmas Eve, around 1812, Pip, a seven years old, encounters an escaped convict in the village churchyard while visiting the graves of his mother, father, and siblings. The convict scares him into stealing food and a file to grind away his shackles. A wealthy spinster, Miss Havisham, asks Pip’s uncle to find a boy to play with her adopted daughter Estella. Pip begins to visit them, and falls in love with Estella. A lawyer approaches Pip and tells him he is to receive a large sum of money from an anonymous benefactor and must immediately leave for London. Assuming that Miss Havisham is his benefactress, he visits her to say good-bye before he sets out for London. The story takes many tumultuous twists and turns in the next few years in their lives.

The book begins with a short preamble in which Lemuel Gulliver gives a brief outline of his life and history before his voyages. During his first voyage, Gulliver is washed ashore after a shipwreck and finds himself a prisoner of a race of tiny people, less than 6 inches tall, who are inhabitants of the island country of Lilliput. After giving assurances of his good behaviour, he is given a residence in Lilliput and becomes a favourite of the court. He is also given the permission to roam around the city on a condition that he would not harm their subjects. Gulliver assists the Lilliputians to subdue their neighbours, the Blefuscudians, by capturing their fleet.

The book is certainly one of the few books in English literature that have mesmerised generations of children, their fathers and their grandfathers at the same time. Written between 1720 and 1725 this book holds its fort even now. The book is a satire on the society, government, so called intellectuals and humans in general. The book comprises four parts—A Voyage to Lilliput, A Voyage to Brobdingnag, A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Lugganagg, Glubbdubdrib, and Japan and A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms. In each part Gulliver goes on a separate voyage and each voyage is preceded by a storm. All four voyages bring new perspectives to Gulliver’s life and new opportunities for satirizing the ways of England.

Heart of Darkness is a gripping novel written by Joseph Conrad, set against the haunting backdrop of colonial Africa. The story follows Charles Marlow, a thoughtful and curious sailor, who journeys deep into the mysterious Congo River in search of the enigmatic ivory trader, Mr. Kurtz. As Marlow travels farther into the wilderness, he begins to uncover unsettling truths—not only about the land and the people who rule over it, but also about human nature itself.
This tale is more than just an adventure; it is a powerful exploration of light and darkness, civilization and savagery, truth and illusion. Through Marlow’s eyes, readers witness the effects of greed, power, and isolation, and are asked to consider where the true heart of darkness lies—within the jungle, or within ourselves.
With rich descriptions, unforgettable imagery, and deep themes that still resonate today, Heart of Darkness remains one of literature’s most haunting journeys into the unknown. It is a story that lingers long after the last page is turned.
